I hope this is helpful! Many graphic novels with teens as lead characters are reflections by adults on the teen experience and not necessarily appropriate for teens. All three of the books pictured above are great stories that are better appreciated by adults. My Friend Dahmer is a great story but it has some disturbing content obvious to you and me, although a friend pointed out many teens may not know who Dahmer is ; Ivy features a teen going through some tough things and coming out the other end; Lighter Than My Shadow, which is just out this month, is the memoir of a woman with an eating disorder who was sexually abused by a therapist during treatment. This may be appropriate for some teens but again, probably more relatable for adults, in addition to having potentially disturbing content.

Once again, Apple has decided to arbitrarily boot more content out of its garden , expressing its concern that things might be getting a little too sexy for its apparent target audience of schoolchildren who have never browsed the internet. Reports are coming in that the digital comics distributor Izneo has had to radically prune their catalog or face banishment from iTunes. Izneo has been selling digital comics on the iPad since they released an iPad app in mid, and they successfully built a catalog of over French and Belgian titles. And since Apple clearly cannot allow their precious iPad to be sullied by salacious content, the censor gave Izneo 30 hours to remove all adult comics. Like other Apple takedown requests, this one arrived with no warning and no clear indication as to what content Apple felt was inappropriate and should be removed. IDBoox broke the story earlier today, and they report that Izneo had absolutely no warning that there was a problem or guidance as to which titles needed to be removed. All they were reportedly told by Apple was that the adult content had to go, so Izneo drastically pruned any comic that showed a breast, cleavage, and even ones with characters evoking a suggestive gesture.

A couple months after digital comics seller Comixology pulled and then reinstated an issue of the popular series Saga from the Apple App Store for fear that the comic was too racy for Apple's guidelines, they've just announced that they've pulled 56 titles from their app's store for the same reason. These books are still available from Comixology's website, but they're not available from Apple's Comixology app. That distinction is probably enough to pacify many people who'd otherwise be angered by this move, but I still think this is bullshit. Apple needs to sell adult content—not even pornography, I'm talking about comics created for adults by celebrated cartoonists like Alison Bechdel and Howard Cruse, for fuck's sake—and not be stupid Puritan fucksticks about it. When the biggest digital storefront for comics in the world restricts the books they sell to all-ages content, they are holding the medium of comics back from what it could become.
